One of the saddest realities that many of today’s roofers struggle with is not making a decent salary despite all the effort they put into their businesses.
Roofers who do not pay themselves enough because they feel they can’t afford to do this usually forosuffer the financial consequences of little gain from their efforts, as do their families.
How do they end up in that situation?
This is usually due to a lack of attention to marketing and brand recognition, finding ways to stand out in the crowd, and establishing self-worth as a business.
With those and other common problems recognized, roofers can build their businesses successfully to pay themselves what they are truly worth!
What Is The Worst Question A Roofer Can Ask and Why?
As normal as the question might seem, “What is the going rate for roofing services” is the worst question any roofer can ask, whether they are just starting out or a seasoned professional.
Though the idea of keeping up with roofing competitors might seem like the right thing to do, it can truthfully lead a roofer down a path that robs them of money.
Why? Because every roofing company is different and runs on a different budget.
What a roofer charges for their services must be a rate that reflects their costs, while also including enough profit to grow the business.
Part of those costs includes paying employees – owners included – a suitable rate.
The going rate for one roofing company will never be the same as that for any other one and roofers who fall into that trap will only cheat themselves.
What Can Roofers Do To Stop Stealing From Themselves?
Roofers who feel they can’t pay themselves what they are worth and what they need to live comfortably and build their companies and a retirement from need to focus on a few different areas of their business.
Firstly, they need to examine their numbers closely to fully understand their sales income, overall costs, and salaries.
Using that information, roofers can find ways to improve their companies with better management and greater efficiency to reduce costs and increase profits.
Secondly, roofers need to take an active role in marketing and sales instead of playing the waiting game by expecting customers to find them.
Aggressive contractors who invest time and money into digital marketing, local marketing, and hiring skilled sales and marketing staff will attract the sales needed to increase profits and grow the business.
